Use of UAVs and Imaging Analysis for Weed Mapping and Site-Specific Management
Combining sensing technologies with UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) pesticide application technology it is possible to reduce labor inputs, worker exposure to pesticides, pesticide use, environmental impact.  Limited research has been conducted to determine UAV-sprayer efficacy.  Application variables may differ from conventional broadcast pesticide applications as well.  Our overall objective is to determine the efficacy of site-specific UAV-herbicide applications based on UAV-imaging to map weed patches.  Our specific objectives are listed below.

  • Determine specific differences in application parameters between UAV applications and conventional broadcast pesticide applications
  • Determine pesticide efficacy applied by a spray capable UAV
  • Determine potential off-target risks associated with UAV applications
